Health and safety
All employers are obliged by law to protect the health, safety and welfare of their employees. In addition, they are obliged to do so for visitors to their premises and to ensure that the products they produce are safe. The best source for ensuring that these issues are managed well is the Health and Safety Authority website [www.hsa.ie]. This provides comprehensive coverage of all health and safety issues. It also provides a set of useful tools that can be used for training, risk assessment and other important elements of a functioning health and safety system.
Key issues covered on this website include:
- Risk assessment tools for different sectors (https://www.besmart.ie/)
- Legislation in the area
- Tools for addressing psychosocial stress
- Industry/sector specific issues
- Notification of accidents
- Education and training
- Small business and health and safety
- Workplace health
- Vehicles at work
The HSA website also refers you on to a wide range of publications and other resources for health, safety and welfare at work.
A new development in 2018 has been the adoption of an ISO standard on occupational health and safety (ISO 45001). This deals with the design of occupational health and safety systems, both at national level and enterprise level. It is expected that this standard will be rolled out over a 3 year period.
Further information on the standard can be found on the NSAI (National Standards Authority of Ireland) website at: https://www.nsai.ie/About-NSAI-(1)/News-Docs/2017-News-Docs/ISO-45001-NSAI-Certification-Presentation.aspx
